Rex hardly ever went to the beach. Most of the time, they were overpopulated with annoying tourists and surfer "dudes" with their "chicks" in tote. But that was during the day. Right now, it was about nine o' clock at night, and the sun had already set. Many people had packed up and deserted ages ago, but there was still a small handful of people. It was a public beach, but Rex wished they would just go away. The people who remained were either in a group of friends, or with a significant other. Rex knew he didn't envy them, he envied what they had. Sure, Rex had friends, but they weren't there right now. They resented the beach as much as he did. He wouldn't admit it to anyone, not even himself, but he felt a little envious of the cuddled up couples that stared at the moon.

Letting out an indignant huff, he focused his attention on the crashing waves before him. It was much cooler now, but that still didn't explain his outfit, which was most certainly not suitable for the beach. The ensemble consisted of dark-washed jeans, a black ACDC shirt, as well as a very dark red thermal under it. His shoes, an old raggedy pair of Converse, were not meant to get wet, so he stayed a safe distance from where the water actually met the land. It was peaceful at that time of night. Everybody seemed to be absorbed in their own thoughts, and Rex was thankful that everyone was considerate enough to keep their d**n gobs shut.

He had his own things to think about. His mom, the primary subject. The mom he never knew. Rex had so many questions regarding her. What was she like? Would she have been a good mother? Would she approve of how he turned out to be? Would Rex had turned out differently if she lived? All of them went unanswered, as his father didn't really know about his shotgun wedding wife to begin with. Rex shook his head to himself, knowing that the more he thought, the more painful the situation would get. Of course, you can't mourn over something he never had, but it wasn't mourning he felt, it was painful wonder.

She had been there all day. The beach was one of her favorite places to be. Whether it be for stress or for just a day of fun. From about 11 this morning, she’d been at the beach, surfing, swimming, soaking up the rays, relaxing and surely, checking out the boys. She was gladly enjoying her day away from friends, from boys, from clique problems. Her whole life was seeming to change and she didn’t like it. Her attitude on things were just not normal and she had lost her interest in things she’d been into not too long ago. She began actually thinking about dating again and actually dating. Not just a night out and call it good, but to have real relationships. Her senior year wasn’t helping. Last year. She was a wreck. Every time there was something that she’d have for the last time, she’d start thinking about it. That’s why the beach was her chill spot. She’d go there whenever she was stressing out. Just the sound of the waves crashing and the sand and the wind. It was calming.

It was close to sunset when she fell asleep on the beach. She had put all her crap back into her car before laying out a towel and taking a small power nap before heading back home. Too bad she didn’t wake up until it was dark. She had decided to nap a ways away from the normal spot that she and her friends go to just to make sure her friends wouldn’t see her. Dumb idea since her car was on the other side of the beach. Biting her lip, she got up, stretching out with her arms up and chest out. God it felt good. She realized that she must have turned a few times while she was sleeping since she had been off the towel and sand was all over her body. She tried to get all of it off, but some still remained in her hair. She picked up the towel and stuffed it into her backpack. Most of the people were gone and she didn’t really care. She kind of liked it. Kiki started to walk along the beach. She didn’t realize how cold it could get this time of day. She was only in her bikini and board shorts. She didn’t like wearing flip flops so she just walked barefoot.

With a sigh, she looked around at all the other people around her, mainly the couples. That didn’t help much to her current dilemma. Kiki looked down at the ground, watching her feet as they led her closer to her car. There was so much that she didn’t want to think about. Reality was something she wanted to run away from. She sighed again, wishing it were different. Do I actually want it to be different, though? You know you‘ll end up hurting someone. She shook her head and looked up. There about 20 yards in front of her was someone who looked somewhat familiar. It was too hard to tell because of the lighting, but the clothes looked like the same clothes. Yes. It was him. She started to run slightly and slightly dove into a hug. “Rex! What in the world are you doing at the beach?” She smirked at him. “I can barely get you to come out here with me.” She gave him the normal kiss on the cheek and smiled.

Rex was broken from his reverie as he was suddenly enveloped into a hug, and greeted cheerily. The dark did not make it very easy to discern the face, even if his eyes had grown accustomed to the dark already. But he didn't need to see her face, he knew her voice. He would have known it anywhere. As a greeting his lips stretched into a grin, and he shrugged his shoulders. "I only come out at night. Less crowded." Then, it struck him that that made him sound a little like a nocturnal lemur or something..

"Hm, I know you like the beach, but what are you doing here late?" he wondered, not able to recall a time when he saw her here after dark. Was she with someone? The possibility immediately popped into his head naturally. It wasn't like he was jealous or anything. If a guy like Rex Bourder ever got jealous, he would have been in much more of a foul mood. But he only assumed she was with someone because Kiki was an outgoing girl, when he was around her anyway. Rex had never learned of her past, simply because they never quite got around to it, even while they were dating. The subject was danced around a few times, but never outright spoken of.

She let Rex out of the hug and sat criss crossed. "I only come out at night. Less crowded." She laughed softly. She was kind of reminded of a bat or something else that was nocturnal. "Hm, I know you like the beach, but what are you doing here late?" She slipped her arm through his and held that wrist with her other hand. “I’m here looking for a dark and brooding handsome stranger that will sweep me off my feet tonight.” Kiki batted her eyelashes in hope to make herself seem that much more ridiculous.

A laugh escaped her lips. “No, really. I fell asleep like over there. I just…” She yawned, covering her mouth. “… woke up.” Now really. What Kiki was doing was thinking about all the crap going on in her life. She rested her head on Rex’s arm. “You didn’t answer my question.” She shivered slightly from the cold. Looking out at the water, she sighed. Something about just diving in the water intrigued her. She part of her wanted to just cool off and the other part said for her to fling herself into the ocean and never come out. “Why are you by yourself at night? Scary people come out at this time of night.”

Rex allowed himself a chuckle. "I think I could be under that scary people category. If you don't believe me, I'm sure anyone else here would tell you." Rex liked to poke fun at himself. He knew that his physical appearance was what usually kept people away, but it was people like Kiki that had managed to get over it. "But, I guess I came out here just to.. think. About stuff." He added the last part, to make it sound more general, and not like he'd come out here specifically to think about his mom.

And for the most part, he didn't. But that didn't need mentioning, did it?
The sun was down, and clothed in the outfit he had, Rex wasn't effected by the weather. Glancing over at her, he had noticed that she was wearing the usual beach clothes. Casually, as if it were nothing, he wrapped his arm around her. That's what friends did, right? He would have given her a jacket or something, but he didn't have one. "So, anything new?" was his attempt for conversation.

Her smile sort of faded as his arm wrapped itself around Kiki. She hoped he didn’t notice nor see. He was one of the people she was thinking about and seeing him sort of made her stomach turn. "So, anything new?" She laughed softly. “New?” Biting her lip, she sighed. “There’s never anything new.” Kiki continued to look at the water. “You know me. Parties and friends.” She sounded so depressed and she couldn’t fake happiness as easily as she normally does.

“What about you?” She smiled softly, her body feeling tense with his arm around her. It wasn’t just the feelings she had for Rex, but also the fact that she didn’t like her body. “What has the infamous Rex Bourder been up to?” Kiki ran her fingers through her hair and pushed it out of her eyes. She looked at Rex, her eyes examining the boy who she’d been having problems with, trying to sort out her feelings, but getting no where. She changed her legs so that they were laying out in front of her. She was trying to give her something else to do and think about rather than going back to the other topic.
